چکیده

C. Josh Donlan Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, Cornell University Ithaca, New York 14853-2701 and Island Conservation University of California Long Marine Laboratories Santa Cruz, California 95060 Abstract Endangered species recovery often requires strategies that are risky, contentious, and difficult to implement. These qualities can lead to recovery actions that result from human dimensions of endangered species conservation instead of biological extent. Here we discuss the recovery actions implemented by the National Park Service in conserving three subspecies of the critically endangered island fox, Urocyon littoralis. We present an overview of how these subspecies became endangered, chronicle the existing and future threats to their persistence, and summarize the actions implemented and needed to save the fox from extinction. Similar to other endangered species programs, this recovery program suffers from a bureaucracy that prevents timely implementation of recovery actions and that is risk averse in its strategies to save the fox. Consequently, even though a wealth of biological information now exists on this species and the threats to its existence are well known, necessary recovery actions are being delayed. Bold, aggressive, and controversial actions are likely to be requisites to save the island fox from extinction.

Phylogeny of gazelles in some islands of Iran based on mtDNA sequences: Species identification and implications for conservation

Different species of gazelles are among the most endangered mammals on the Asian steppes and occur in the central, southern and northwestern regions of Iran. The previous conservation efforts in this region have been incomplete due to confusion about the phylogenetic relationship among various populations. So that, different conservation programs such as ex-situ breeding and transfer of captive...

Biochemical and hematologic reference intervals for the endangered island fox (Urocyon littoralis).

Hematologic and serum biochemical data collected must be interpreted by comparison with normal reference intervals generated from healthy animals, within a similar population, because many blood parameters are influenced by diet, environment, and stress. Species-specific reference intervals for the endangered island fox (Urocyon littoralis) are not available. We reviewed hematology and serum bi...

Selection of nesting habitat of hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) in two coral islands of Qeshm and Hengam in the Persian Gulf, Iran

The Persian Gulf islands are the nesting regions for the severely endangered hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) species. Therefore, the selection of the nesting habitat of this species in the two islands of Qeshm and Hengam was studied by a five-member working group in the spring of 2013 - 2015. Ultimately, 23 and 17 nests were identified in the south of Qeshm Island and in the south and...

Mitochondrial Genomes Suggest Rapid Evolution of Dwarf California Channel Islands Foxes (Urocyon littoralis)

Island endemics are typically differentiated from their mainland progenitors in behavior, morphology, and genetics, often resulting from long-term evolutionary change. To examine mechanisms for the origins of island endemism, we present a phylogeographic analysis of whole mitochondrial genomes from the endangered island fox (Urocyon littoralis), endemic to California's Channel Islands, and main...

Identification of marine ornamental fishes in northern part of the Persian Gulf, Iran

In the past decade, the investment in fisheries development has grown remarkably in the Persian Gulf region. A 1800 km of northern coastline of the Persian Gulf, the Oman Sea and more than 14 islands belong to Iran have provided great possibilities of economic activities. In-shore marine islands such as Kish, Farour, Hendurabi, Tonb made a good opportunity for fishing and harvesting of ornament...
